Demonstrating on Fridays or blockading Berlin’s government district: Worldwide, the climate crisis is driving young people into the streets. The generation of “digital natives” is constantly being presented with new communication tools and platforms to help them live a more sustainable and environment-friendly life. There are now many apps offering answers and support in this matter. Below we present our five favorites, which are available for Android and Apple devices:
Too Good to Go
One third of all produced food is wasted. Despite personal efforts to reduce food waste, we often have no influence on the outside world. The Too Good to Go App is dedicated to the concept of a world without waste. Simply enter your zip code and pick up food bags from supermarkets or restaurants. After closing time, they hand out leftover food or food that has exceeded its expiration date at a very low price.
Go Green Challenge
The app is based on the principle that small actions have big consequences. Small steps can make a difference in the environment with daily tasks like “collect garbage” or “buy only second hand today”. Through frequent use of the app, more mindful and sustainable behavior will be internalized.
Vinted
Sometimes we like to reward us with something new, like the warm cozy jacket from the store window or the trendy sneakers from the sports shop. However, the fashion industry alone is responsible for five percent of the world’s global emissions. In addition, more and more clothes are being thrown away to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Still, we don’t want to renounce completely either. Vinted offers a platform on which used clothing can be sold or exchanged. Especially among younger people the app is very popular.
Ecosia
A switch from Google to Ecosia is worth it. Not only are lots of trees being planted, but the company itself is also committed to renewable energy. The profits from every search query goes to a non-profit nature conservation organization, which has set itself the goal of preserving and reforesting the forests. On average, 45 search queries finance one tree through Ecosia. You can even track the number of trees that were planted as a result of your own queries.
CodeCheck
Sustainable beauty and care products are gaining popularity in the drugstore market. More and more companies are offering environmentally friendly alternatives. But which ingredients can be found in the products and what distinguishes them from conventional beauty products? The app CodeCheck offers a way to test the ingredients of beauty products in terms of environmental friendliness. Just download the app and scan the barcode the next time you go shopping.
